The Slade School of Fine Art approaches the practice of contemporary art and the history and theories that inform it in an experimental, research-oriented and imaginative way. An art school with a world leading reputation, the Slade makes a significant contribution to the field of contemporary art both nationally and internationally.
As part of UCL, London’s Global University and one of the leading research universities in the world, Slade students and staff often develop collaborative projects and interdisciplinary research initiatives both within UCL and beyond.
The Slade has a lively and dynamic practice-led research culture. All studio staff are practising artists with significant exhibition profiles, actively involved in research as well as teaching. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework 94% of the Slade’s individual research outputs were recognised as world leading (55%) and internationally excellent (39%). Our practice-led research facilitates an ongoing commitment to excellence in fine art research while also supporting research collaborations with other artists, curators and researchers, which increasingly address pressing societal and cultural challenges.
Slade alumni go on to achieve a high level of international recognition and success and account for many leading figures in the international art world including Turner Prize winners and nominees.
As we look to the future, we want to ensure the Slade remains an open and inclusive environment for future artists to experiment, develop and thrive. Our world is made up of many voices and perspectives and we all want to see our stories and passions reflected in the art we enjoy.
